Blach's Environmental Sustainability Team
More than half of Blach Construction's project workforce is comprised of LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs), and that number is growing. The company encourages all of its project employees to become LEED accredited and has implemented a generous incentive program to achieve this goal. Each employee pursuing LEED AP status is given $600 toward the $300 cost of the exam. If the employee passes the exam on the first attempt, they retain the remaining $300 as a bonus. If it is necessary to retake the exam, the remaining $300 may be used to cover that cost.
As part of Blach's overall commitment to building and operating in an environmentally responsible manner, a team of more than 20 employees have formed Blach's Environmental Sustainability Team (BEST). BEST ensures the continuation of the company's pledge to sustainability both internally and externally, as well as exploring the ever-evolving future of green technologies and trends.
Over the past decade, Blach has instituted numerous sustainable initiatives to "green" its business practices including the changing of its gas-powered truck fleet to more fuel-efficient models, using 100% recycled paper products, carpooling, videoconferencing and others. In 2008, the company introduced some of the most progressive policies and new resources to its employees, including:
- The purchase of Toyota Prius hybrid automobiles to be used by Blach staff for all business transportation
- A $5,000 cash incentive for employees to purchase the very highest mileage vehicles (Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid)
- A comprehensive carpooling program which incentivizes employees to reduce their mileage for commuting to and from project sites and utilizing public transportation
- The replacement of paper plates and plastic utensils with post-consumer waste and compostable products
- Switching from 30% post-consumer waste stationery to 100% post-consumer waste, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified stationery
